Q: can i fit an ipad air 4 generation in a soft case in zipped back pocket in large bag?

No not in the back outside zip pocket as it's only 25cm x 16cm. But it would definitely fit inside the centre zip pocket, I've carried my kindle fire 10 with plenty of room to spare.

Q: Is the large sized bag suitable for a4 sized books for school?

No.Not really. You can use it for an iPad or something quite slim and sturdy of a similar size but you will struggle with A4 books if more than one.

Q: Can you iron patches onto the bag?

Would not like to try it. It is polyester so would not use hot iron on fabric. Could try fabric glue but remember that it is also waterproof. Would sew patch on - carefully!
