Mellow Mellow

I bought the second collection of Mellow Mellow by chance after hearing it in the background as I browsed Ameoba Records in San Franscisco. The guy on the till had to take it out of the CD player to sell it to me. It became the soundtrack to our holiday in California and we listened on a loop all the way back to LA on the Pacific Coast Highway. Finding Mellow Mellow 1 on Amazon two years later made my day! Just fabulous - there's not a bad track on it and as a compilation it is just perfect. Buy it!

After winning the anniversary edition of Mellow Mellow from a competition on Solar Radio, I had to buy the first album. Again, another great album with some terrific tracks with by far the best (in my opinion) being the truly great Sylvia Striplin's 'You Can't Turn Me Away'.

frankly, an astonishing compilation - not a duff track among them....laid back, funky, summer vibes....for funk and soul obsessives and just those in search of music which reaches the soul and the feet.....brilliant

To start with, congratulations to Harmless for yet another superb collection. This mellower set (hence the name) is another fine addition to 'The Breaks' and 'Pulp Fusion' series, 'Stand Up and be Counted' and 'I'm a Good Woman'- they are fast becoming THE definitive collection masters.For the trainspotters amongst us, you'll be happy to know that there are Hip Hop samples galore in here: from the Eric B and Rakim ('Mahogony') of Al Green to the Black Moon ('Buck 'Em Down' Remix)of The Walrus of Love himself, Mr. Barry White plus many, many more.But this collection demands far more attention than just 10 second segments of songs, for this really is a wonderful compilation lovingly put together by people who know whats up and, boy, they've mined some golden nuggets here.....I've yet to mention the cornerstone of this purchase though, for this is worth the price of admission alone : the ULTRA rare Roy Ayers Music Productions (RAMP) version of 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' which has to be heard to be believed and in my opinion even surpases the magnificent original. Kick back, relax and let it wash over you for this is why the word 'beautiful' was invented.Roy makes 2 further appearences here, firstly as producer on Sylvia Striplin whose magnificent 'You can't Turn Me Away' is another highlight, as well as my personal favorite here, RAMPS's 'Daylight' which provides the mellowest stoned bassline to the killer 'Bonita Applebum' by Quest.On the downside, a few predictable tunes roll in (yet another calling of Quincy Jones 'Summer In The City' and Isaac Hayes 'Ikes Mood') to take a little of the glimmer away but it's only the gripe of familiarity that can be levelled at quality tunes such as these.As the marvellous Lowrell says 'Mellow Mellow, Right On'. Buy it !

absolutley fantastic.almost every single track here is a winner.from the sublime 'summer in the city' by quincy jones (the inspiration for nightmares on wax's 'les nuits' & 'nights interlude' and the pharcyde's 'passing me by) to the wonderfully mellow version of 'everybody loves the sunshine' by RAMP this album is simply a must buy.and if you thought kool & the gang were some sad 80's group, think again as you listen to the 8 and a half spaced out minutes of 'summer madness'as those folks at harmless have released a number of series of compilations, i can only hope that they follow suit with mellow mellow and i look forward to number 2 in the series with eager anticipation.
