Good GMRS Antenna

Good quality antenna. Use on GMRS. Have similar antenna for 2 meter does well also.

Pleasantly surprised

I purchased this antenna based on the other reviews but because of the low price still had some reservations about it.This antenna gave me a SWR of 1.6 at 467 mhz and 1.2 on the lower end at 462 mhz. I have to say it performs extremely well. All feedback I have received report a strong and clear signal. Im using a 45 watt Kenwood and easily reaching repeaters 30+ miles away (mounting height is 35’ / elevation 690’). The antenna appears to be solidly made and built for longevity. Very pleased and recommend for GMRS.

Very strange antenna (in a good way)

Okay I have an update! I took additional readings with the antenna directly on the radio as shown in the photos. I don’t know if the reviewers before me did this but the SWR was a bit higher than expected, especially with a five watt radio. I didn’t know this but the SWR can decrease even with jumper in between. I found out after a fellow from my GMRS group told me, so I wanted to see it for myself. I guess that as long as the reading doesn’t reach 3 there will be no danger to the radio. If I’m correct a higher reading of 3+ will be noticeable because your radio will become warm, especially if the HT pushes 7 watts or more. I noticed this with a TYT that I have that’s rated at 10W +- . I used the rubber duckie that came with it and talked to my friends. The radio got almost hot. But when I connect it to my car’s mobile antenna it never warms up.————————————————————————I ordered it mostly for testing purposes. What I find strange is that it has a very low SWR without a ground plane. I just got my SWR meter today and connected the antenna to a magnetic base which has an RG58 cable which is quite thin and long. Additionally it’s a BNC so I had to purchase UHF adapters to complete the connections with radio and all. The magnetic base was just placed on a desk with no metal surface. I did the measurement and got about 1.2 SWR max and 4.7 watts from my Puxin-333. Despite the adapters, the long cable and no ground plane it still got between 1.1 and 1.2??? You can’t fake SWR as far as I know so to me this is an impressive feat! Here’s the rest of the rundown. The mag base cable is also BNC terminated to which at the end I attached an adapter to connect to the PL259 on the meter. The other side I connected a UHF jumper cable RG213 and to it’s other end the radio. Did I serve as a ground just because I touched the radio to press the PTT while in this configuration? No idea. I was a bit skeptical at first.

Please just get the bundle with ground plane kit

I can't speak to the range on this antenna. I picked it up to use as a backup or "attic antenna" for my small GMRS repeater during lightning storms. I plan to switch to this antenna during lightning to help prevent my repeater from taking a lightning strike.I didn't get the ground plane kit at first, but SWR left a lot to be desired. 2-ish. Go ahead and just buy the bundle with the ground plane kit. It's worth it.

Seems to work well

I was going to make a mobile setup for this but decided to keep it at base. It's mounted on a standoff about 15ft up a mast in my yard, and used for GMRS. I'm hearing lots more, and am able to hit previously unheard repeaters. I may have to get another for it's original use.

Here is the SWR and the Cable I used

I hold a Ham and GMRS license, I have been building antennas for over 18 years.I purchased this antenna , I did not need the counterpoise.Ok, SWR, Channel 1 : 1.23 SWR and on Channel 30: 1.40 there is your spread.I am running 20 feet of rg8x to a lightning surge protector, then 20 feet of LMR 400 that connects to the antenna. total of 40 feet.I do recommend this antenna. I will say I believe this antenna uses the coax as a counterpoi

Getting excellent reports on my 5 watt gmrs

I prefer to use an outdoor antenna and I’m getting great reports with my local GMRS contacts and a repeater that’s 9 air miles from my house. I’m at a very low elevation compared to my surroundings and I’m having zero difficulty activating that repeater with amazing clarity. My sources are a friend on the phone about 20 miles away from the repeater, and some new contacts that heard me on my car roof antenna, my handheld standing on my patio, and this current antenna mounted to a mast. The difference is noticeable and I would definitely recommend this antenna. The price is good, too.
