Q: Would this product work with a 5 year old child, who weighs approx. 40lbs? HE is able to walk holding my hand, but lacks balance and confidence.

Hello, my son is 21 months old and weighs around 34 pounds. I am still able to secure the Velcro (I am able to close it about half the way) and the snap closure in the back. For 40 pound, I would say it will probably be a tight fit. But even if you can barely close the Velcro, the snap closure, which has a little bit of a give, will hold it securely around your son's torso. If I were you I would order it and see if it fits. You can always send it back. My son's PT told me to not put the shoulder straps like you can see in the pictures but underneath his arms/armpit and hold them in the back closer to his body. Then when he gets more secure walking you hold onto the straps farther away from the body until you only hold them at the loops (at the end). My son actually likes the tight fit around his torso. I think it gives him a feeling of stability. But I have to say that he had to get used to it. He was scared in the beginning because he was used to holding onto our hands when trying to walk and then all of a sudden his hands were free. I hope this helps.
