Neat sound recorder

Although this is a memo taker it actually reaches into other areas by virtue of it's stereo capability and CD resolution recording setting. It can be used for recording music and has some useful settings to accomplish this. It's not quite up to studio quality and the built in microphones are a basic but decent quality,I have been using it with a Roland CS-10EM binaural headset to record my audio experiences when I'm out and about and the results are uncannily good! The headset works perfectly with the Sony recorder (as will any external microphone requiring plug-in power) and the recording quality is excellent, clean and low noise. Plenty of dynamic range available for most situations. For use out and about it is extremely convenient as it its about half the size of an old (non smart) mobile phone and the batteries last for more than enough time for a days roaming around. It transfers to PC easily enough with the built in USB connector. However, this arrangement does seem a bit vulnerable to being knocked out of place and I worry it might break! I think I would have preferred a socket and cable arrangement. It can take Micro SD cards but will store more than 5 hours of high quality WAV recording using the on board 4Gb memory so this device comes pre-loaded with a usable amount of memory. It does also record in MP3 format in which case you can store over 39 hours at 192kbps.The only possible negative is the display which has tiny text and can be difficult to read at times. But once you've got it set up the controls are easy so shouldn't present a problem.Altogether a very neat, high quality device.

Impressive, clear, recording.

Had to purchase this, as I gave up with inferior, sub-£30 digital recorders that I purchased from online sellers. The Sony TX660 is not a budget recorder, due to it's premium price, but in very many cases with premium goods, you get what you pay for. I have purchased many USB digital recorders, which are very discreet, and can be used at functions such as weddings/marriage ceremonies etc. They provide basic quality sound of which some are better than others. These have disappeared from sale, to a greater extent, and I am not really surprised. The Sony TX660 has impressed with its excellent, clear, sound quality, which is adjustable, and can be tailored for many events like meetings, conferences, lectures, and the like. While I would never advocate covert, secret recording without informing people that they are being recorded; (it could land you in big trouble!), the voice quality that this thing picks up if worn as a pocket clip attached recorder is impressive.Once you have experimented with the various setting menus on the the OLED screen, and become more familiar with the small side buttons, which are small, I admit, you will not be disappointed with the sound results, once transferred to Laptop or PC.The Sony is a excellent piece of kit in a small, discreet, package, but at a price that reflects this.

Good quality

I bought an Olympus first time but I had some problem whit it and I tried to found a Sony with lower price and it is. It is a little old type but I didn't need an expensive stereo recorder. I bought it and I like it. It has a lot of function, noise cut, microphone sensitivity (it is great function) etc butI can use it very easy.If you buy it you will be satisfies.Just an advice for you. If you make a record and you think there is a little distorsion then CHANGE the microphone sensitivity to LOW, if you use this staff in a big romm for example then you can increase the sensitivity, but if you use it for a simple dictaphone then you have to set it to LOW because it will be too loud for this. Really good.

Well worth the money!

One of the best voice recorders I have ever used! It records my inspections clearly making playback and report writing a breeze. I will never go back to notebooks - I was contemplating when the cheap voice recorder I brought was fuzzy on playback - missing essential points.

Serious piece of high quality kit

If you want to spontaneously voice record your ideas or important lectures, this is the recorder for you. In addition to this Sony, I purchased a cheap alternative as back up, for around £20, and it was a waste of money compared to the this excellent piece of kit. This Sony Icd-UX570 is well worth the money because it records instantly the moment you press the button (compared to 5-6 sec delay on the cheap one). This to me is probably the most important feature and the whole point of having a dedicated voice recorder - to record ideas as they come into your head. It's also very quite in operation (the cheap recorder made a noisy click sound on pressing any of the buttons), automatically saves each recording and is intuitive to use, compared with the cheaper one. I particularly like the user-friendly icons for different settings for recording lectures. These are shown nice and clear and it's quite easy to select the option you need without even reading the instructions. One of the best features I think, is the pop out USB feature which elimates the need for carrying around an extra cord - important when caring about the environment. You'll notice I haven't really commented on the audio quality or the techinical aspects. I can assure you to the discerning ear the quality of the recording is excellent but other than that I leave it to the boffins to review the technical detail, I'm not very good at that!Alas I will be passing the Sony recorder to my lucky daughter who is about to join university. This leaves me the £20 recorder which I don't think I'll be using for much longer so I'll be saving up for another Sony Icd-UX570.
