Great Radio! Be sure to read the manual! Lots and lots of features.

Be sure to CHARGE THE BATTERY before you use this radio. OK, I said that first because many of the 1 & 2 star reviews complained about battery life. Any new Li-Ion battery will need to be fully charged before use or the life of the battery will be significantly decreased. And one nice feature of this radio is that the battery is replaceable so you could carry spare batteries if you need to.I wanted a low-cost NOAA radio, but I'm really surprised at how good this radio is. I won't go into all the details because there are lots of 5-Star reviews that do that already for you. YouTube has some great reviews and the XHDATA website has some video and picture training, too.The user manual supplied with the radio is very small and hard to read, so I went to the XHDATA website and tried to download the manual from there. I could not get that manual to open (on two different computers), so I contacted them via email and they answered later that day (from China!) with the English manual attached as a PDF. Great service! Seeing the manual on a computer screen definitely helps! The radio has apparently had some upgrades made that are not reflected in the manual. For instance, changing the temperature display from degrees C to F is not done by changing the FM frequency range like the manual states. You change the temp reading by pressing the "V-" button (with the radio off) to read "10" on the display (sets degrees F and the AM radio range for U.S.). It's important to get the AM (shown as MW on screen) and the FM range set correctly per the manual for your country. The manual also does not describe that when you are listening to the SW band, you can display and tune the Meters in the upper display by long-pushing the Band key. While this may not seem important to a regular user, it can be if you're looking to get somewhere fast on the frequency range. For instance, the NIST time clock radio station WWV, is available on the SW range at 2500, 5000, 10000 and 25000khz. Trying to tune to those frequencies using the tuning knob will take forever! And once you get there, you can store those individually in memory! The memory feature works in all the bands except the WX band where you don't need it anyway. The digital display and fine pitch tuning knob give you precise frequency control that's just not available on an analog sliding scale. The Bluetooth feature is really nice for playing music from your phone and even taking calls. It has a built-in mic, etc. I haven't tried an SD (radio/manual calls it a TF) card, but I don't usually listen to music that way. It would be a nice feature, however, if you were camping off the grid! The sound is very rich and clear, and any sound source with bass is played by the bass disk on the back. Nice! This is truly an emergency radio as it has a lot of features that might be necessary during an outage, or even just camping. The "torch" (flashlight) and the reading Lamp are both bright with 3-levels when the radio is off but only "high" when the radio is on (?). And the SOS feature is LOUD and the red flashing light is bright as well. The solar panel works very well even in not-so-bright light. I leave mine on a window sill in the morning when I'm not using it and it keeps the battery up to full charge.Honestly, for the price, you can't beat this radio. It's a nice handheld size and the quality of workmanship is outstanding. The only Con I have is that the temperature display is way low by as much as 6 degrees. I compared it to two other thermometers, (see picture) just to be sure. Is that important? Not to me.It sure seems like a very rugged and durable unit. Go to the XHDATA.com.cn website and look at all the features. You'll be impressed!

Absolutely the BEST Budget NOAA SW AM FW Solar Crank Radio

I was on a quest for the best, and inexpensive, NOAA weather radio with Shortwave. This is it. The two negative reviews I guess didn't read the manual as it does display Fahrenheit and tune USA AM stations (9k/10k) just fine. Here are the most notable features I looked for in a Bug Out Bag radio.Removeable battery - This radio uses an 18650 nipple, non-protected, short height 3000 mAh battery. Not only is it easily replaceable, the radio acts as an 18650 charger, plus it doubles as a phone charger battery bank. USB-C in, USB-A out (5V, 1A). The biggest problem with most of these NOAA radios is that the battery is internal and is always dead after a few months storage in your bag. Just remove the battery before packing and you are good to go for at least a year. Store extra 18650 batteries (with tip and short) and you are all set.NOAA, AM, FM, SW, Bluetooth, MP3 - This radio does it all, including 1.711 to 29.999 MHz tuning. Crazy! The internal, tilting telescopic antenna is good for most signals, but add a clip on antenna for the faint ones. All the stations I listened to came in strong and clear. There is also a Bass Port, so the sound is rich and not tinny. Rotary tuning knob and hundreds of auto scanning stations are a plus. Push button volume though. Bonus - you can even answer a cellphone call through the radio if you are using the Bluetooth feature with its built in mic.Flashlight and Reading Light - When the radio is off, the front flashlight has three modes of brightness, same with the folding reading light. When the radio is on, both lights only use their highest setting (I'd prefer the 3 settings when the radio is on too, maybe they will adjust that in the future). The color is slightly warm, probably a daylight temp. There is no noticeable flicker either.Other Features - There is an SOS blinking red light with loud alarm, NOAA weather scanning alert, lanyard, belt loops, TF card reader, earphone jack, time, alarm, sleep, temperature, and signal strength meters, all in a very tiny package. I love it!Solar and Crank - As with most of these radios, these features are more of a gimmick. It would take something like 10 hours to crank and several days in the sunlight to charge a dead battery. It would be best to use a folding 10-20 watt solar panel and have it charge a couple 18650 batteries during the day, then rotate them through the radio as needed. Use the extra 18650s in other flashlights, lanterns, etc.Cons - The only cons I see is that the unit is not waterproof. It may survive a splash, but definitely no dunking. Also, the red and white LEDs share the same chip, so when using the front spot flashlight, there is a dull spot where the red LED blocks some of the white light. It isn't terrible, but you will probably notice. They packed a bunch of features in a tiny package so a little patience will be required to learn the buttons. This is the radio that made it to my Bug Out Bag. All the others were returned or given away.At less than $40, nothing comes close.

Very good. IMPORTANT: AM setup info

IMPORTANT: Setting the radio to AM !0k from the default 9K is not as described in the paper instructions that come in the box. However it is well described on the Amazon page for this radio. I was about to send it back but then found this:1. Turn off the radio2. Press and hold the "V-" button until the screen displays 9K or 10K3. Long press "V-" button again to switch between AM 520-1710KHz(10K) or 522-1620(9K)Another tip regarding "browsing" by pressing the >>| button. The direction the scan will go depends on the previous turn of the dial. If you were tuning around and the last dial turn was backwards, the browse scan will go backwards (and vise versa). It does a great job on all bands. I use mostly SW, MW, and WB. I am happy with its ATS scanning on SWbecause it digs out signals that are very weak that I would miss tuning by hand, without all the false signals.

A great value and very helpful in an emergency

This little device (it's more than a radio) is a must have for emergencies and just for listening. This thing has AM, FM, Shortwave, and weather. The speaker works well. Both FM and Bluetooth have good stereo sound with headphones. Shortwave can scan all the bands available, and you can manually tune to anything in the entire Shortwave range if you want something out of band. There's also a flashlight and a reading light, a built-in thermometer, and crank and solar power. One thing to note: this device has a bit of a learning curve, and channel setting is necessary for Shortwave listening.
