save your $$$$$

For starters.this is FAR from a "complete guide", and most of the plants don't grow in North America. For the plants that do grow here, the photos/drawings are mostly worthless for identification. There are lots of books out there much better for foraging or survival use; buy one of them. I returned this one for a refund.

Good for locating three edible plants per continent.

This may be a guide to edible wild plants, but it is not landmass specific. So you get to read up on a few edible wild plants in sub-Saharan Africa, even though you live in North America. Unless you plan on doing some epic survival trek in a far away place, don't bother with this book. I was tricked into buying it because it was Army produced, and I've done a survival trek with the military, but this resource was so general it's pretty much useless.Minus stars because I tried to return this book, and UPS never picked up the return. So when I tried to cancel and resubmit for refund, Amazon told me the book was no longer eligible for return.

Don't buy this book

No matter how helpful information can be, you need to be able to interpret the complementary images in order to use it in practice. This feild guide has dreadful images that are poor quality (grainy or unclear) and poorly executed (taken with too little light, taken with too high of contrast, etc). The photos are not nearly detailed enough to demonstrate slight differences between plants, and the information included within the descriptions was incredibly general. I would recommend several other feild guides ahead of this one.

mostly plants from other countries

My fault, I didn't look to see that this book was plants all over the world, I don't believe I'll travel that far. Nice layout with photos and warnings, but I won't waste the space in my backpack with so much useless information, for me that is. Return policy states that I pay shipping and a restocking fee. I'll just keep it in my car for an occasional reference.

Not terribly complete after all...

This is a weird little collection. It includes a lot of plants that you'll only find in exotic overseas locations, but doesn't include some edible plants that are really prevalent in the US, like violets and goutweed. It also doesn't mention toxic lookalikes and in at least one instance that I noticed, it said all pines are safe, when a few species such as the ponderosa pine are actually quite toxic. This was written by the Army, so I imagine it might be more helpful if you're behind enemy lines in the jungle, but less so for the civvie wondering what weeds in her backyard are edible.

Disappointing reference photo quality

The information in this book seems good, however since it’s a guide of identifying editable versus poisonous plants, I would have expected the images to be of highest quality. All the photos in this book look low resolution (72dpi) and come out blurry, dark and pixelated. I would not trust myself to identify most of the plants because of that hence making it a waste money.

Good info, but where was the graphics depatment?

The pictures are the worst...a 5th grader could've edited them better on his mom's phone. The info is good. Also includes section on poisonous plants. Its very functional, but not easy to use (sorted alphabetically instead of by region or something) it's a good reminder to double check what you already know when you're in the field, and perhaps a useful study tool, but please dont go wilderness camping and expect to figure out what's safe to eat on the spot with this book. I'd give it four stars, but the pictures are THAT bad.

Book is informative, but disappointing also!

This book is informative, but most pictures are in black and white. Kind of disappointing because it makes it harder to identify the plants. I thought that the Army would have published a more detailed, colorful book.

For US, not UK

Looks like a good book. Returned it however due to my own error of not realising that this is for US and not UK

Plants of the world

This is ok, but I suppose I was expecting more emphasis on UK plants.

good knowledge on edible plants,(ARMY)

photograph quality isn't perfect but the book is full and helpful.

plants

not sure I would trust myself to eat plants without more photographic evidence than this book gives but very informative
